Mission: Disaster at Morska
The stars stretched into brilliant ribbons before collapsing back into pinpoints as the Eclipse eased out of warp. The familiar shimmer faded from the view screen, replaced by the darkness of deep space broken only by distant stars and the amber glow of the Klingon frontier. The bridge was quiet, not exactly silent but rather occupied by the comfortable rhythm of experienced officers who had long since learned to read one another with little more than a glance. Consoles chirped softly as systems recalibrated after warp. The subdued lighting reflected from polished black control panels, casting faint blue highlights across uniforms. Mitsu sat forward in the center chair, her eyes were fixed on the view screen.
"The border marker is dead ahead," Vesper reported from the helm, her fingers dancing effortlessly across the flight controls. "We've arrived at the designated rendezvous coordinates."
Eva looked up from where she sat at the science station. "The Wright should already be here," she said, a touch of concern in her voice as she spoke.
Mitsu nodded. "They were ordered to arrive ahead of us, in fact they should have arrived at least two hours ahead of us," she said.
Kev frowned as operations continued comparing transponder traffic against the mission package. "I'm not reading any active Federation transponder within five light years."
Jaina folded her hands behind her back at Tactical, her eyes narrowing slightly as long range sensors swept the surrounding volume of space and she studied the readings. "No weapons fire detected," she reported. "No warp signatures within immediate sensor range."
Eva leaned forward over her console. "Captain, I'm also not reading the Wright."
Mitsu's expression remained unchanged, but the Wright's absence spoke louder than any report. The Wright was a Defiant class escort, primary built for combat. Ships like that didn't simply disappear.
"Expand the search," Mitsu ordered calmly.
The Eclipse's sensor arrays reached farther into the surrounding darkness, probing every cubic kilometer of empty space surrounding the rendezvous point. Several minutes passed, and the bridge remained almost unnaturally quiet.
Eva's fingers moved rapidly across her console as multiple sensor frequencies overlapped. "I'm detecting trace duranium fragments," she finally reported.
Kev immediately redirected operations. "Receiving matching returns," he added after a moment.
An alert sounded, then another. Eva's expression changed as she read the readouts on her console. "Captain," she said in a dark tone of voice.
Mitsu recognized the tone immediately. "Report," she said, although she could take a guess on what was coming.
Eva hesitated only briefly before she spoke. "I'm finding debris." The view screen shifted, replacing empty space with magnified imagery collected by the Eclipse's long range sensors. Twisted hull plating slowly tumbled through space. Easily seen by the magnified imagery were sections of ablative armor, a shattered impulse manifold, and fragments of EPS conduits still venting frozen plasma into the vacuum. No intact ship remained, only wreckage.
Kev swallowed as he reported. "I'm detecting Federation construction alloys."
Jaina's tactical display immediately overlaid identification markers. "Cross referencing structural composition," she said. A long moment followed before she spoke again. "I have a match. The debris is consistent with Defiant class construction." Another confirmation flashed across the Tactical board. "Registry fragments located," Jaina's voice became noticeably quieter as she reported. "The registry listed on the debris is confirmed. It's the Wright."
No one moved. Even the bridge itself seemed to pause. Mitsu rose from the command chair. "Bring us to one quarter impulse," she ordered.
"Aye, Captain," Vesper said quietly from the helm. The Eclipse drifted toward the expanding debris field. As they closed the distance, more pieces became visible.
Kev continued his scans. "I'm detecting no escape pods, no life signs anywhere," he finally reported.
The realization settled heavily across the bridge. There had been no survivors. The Eclipse slipped carefully through the outer edge of the debris field as Vesper handled the Eclipse with remarkable precision, avoiding slowly rotating sections of hull with gentle corrections of the impulse engines.
"Maintain current speed," Mitsu instructed. "I want every piece catalogued."
Eva shifted sensor frequencies again. "I'm beginning a forensic reconstruction," she said.
"What can you tell us?" Mitsu asked.
"Very little," Eva replied with a frown. "The damage doesn't resemble disruptor impacts. In fact," she paused and double checked her readings before her frown deepened. "I'm detecting residual subspace distortions."
Kev looked over from Operations. "Are they natural?"
"I don't know," Eva replied. "They don't correspond to known warp field geometries. They're decaying rapidly, but I can confirm that I can't identify them. I've checked against everything in our database. It's almost as if whatever produced these distortions doesn't exist in our records."
The view screen continued displaying the shattered remains of the Wright drifting endlessly through the darkness. Mitsu watched them for several long seconds. The escort had been assigned to protect the Eclipse, instead, someone had annihilated her before the rendezvous.
"Our original orders were to rendezvous with the Wright before continuing to Morska," Eva said quietly.
Mitsu nodded slowly, her gaze never leaving the view screen. "The Wright can no longer fulfill that assignment."
Jaina looked toward the center chair. "If whoever destroyed her is still operating in this sector, then they may be watching us even as we speak."
Mitsu considered that carefully as her gaze went from officer to officer. Turning back now would leave the Klingon colony unanswered, however, continuing forward might place the Eclipse directly into contact with whatever had destroyed a heavily armed Defiant class starship. Neither option was attractive.
"Our mission hasn't changed," she finally said. "The colony at Morska transmitted a distress call. Until we know otherwise, there may still be people there depending on Starfleet. Set Yellow Alert."
A soft pulsing tone echoed throughout the ship as the yellow alert lighting illuminated the bridge. The familiar announcement followed seconds later.
Mitsu turned toward Helm. "Lieutenant Wolfe, resume course for Morska."
"Aye, Captain," Vesper said.
The Eclipse slowly accelerated away from the shattered remains of the USS Wright. Behind her, the debris field drifted silently through the darkness, a graveyard marking the last known position of the USS Wright.
